Greetings Agile Ageing Alliance,
I am your new 20 something news and social media editor. My predecessor Adam has been covering AAA news for the past 5 years and when I learned AAA was seeking a replacement I was really keen to grab the baton.
Why is that? Well recently, my nan, a proud home-owner, finally gave into the idea of a care home. I’ll always remember her stories of how she worked multiple jobs, day and night to be able to afford the house, which at the time, cost a few thousand pounds. While we did our best to move her bedroom downstairs, there was only so much retrofitting could achieve to help her live independently.
I wonder as well, had she lived together with family, or in a multigenerational neighbourhood where younger couples were able to check in on her in exchange for authentic recipes; would she still have been able to enjoy the fruits of her labour in the garden and bake cakes for the grandchildren? I knew it was possible, having visited my partner’s family in Asia thriving with three generations under one roof. Yet, here in the UK, the notion seemed just as distant as the journey across the world itself.
My final interview was with AAA Founder Ian Spero. I guess I was a little taken aback when he asked how I wanted to live when I’m older. I think most people, myself included, don’t realise they have this option - the possibility of shaping their own future. Many seem to concede to the notion of being a burden to society; It doesn’t have to be that way.
Over the coming months, I’ll be exploring the world of ageing and multigenerational living, so please do join me on this journey as I look to discover what lies ahead for my own future and how, together, we can redefine ageing.
